Shopping and eating out gluten-free in Cologne – Germany’s fourth largest city! – is fairly easy – if you know what to look for. Find names of supermarkets and organic supermarket chains, drug stores and other shopping ideas in the Gluten-free Shopping in Germany section as it includes many suggestions located in Cologne. For more information on how to find gluten-free foods in German supermarkets and what brand or store names to look for please refer to the Gluten-free Shopping in Europe section.
In 2014, I wrote up a list of my six favorite gluten-free restaurant suggestions in Cologne for stay.com. The list is still pretty much up-to-date.
For a more comprehensive list of gluten-free addresses also check out this map or review the list for Cologne on Zöliakie-Treff.de, both of which are updated according to recent findings.
These lists are certainly great assets, but it is recommended that you check with the restaurant staff about whether a meal is in fact gluten-free and prepared without the risk of contamination. Cooks, staff and recipes can change at any time, and as always, it’s better to be safe rather than sorry! For more information on the EU’s legal framework for the declaration of allergens in restaurants, read the Eating out Gluten-free Safely section
I’d also like to recommend the chocolate store in the chocolate museum at Rheinauhafen, a visit at the Kölner Rum Kontor near Eigelstein for an amazing international selection of rum and other hard liquor and a visit to Kölner Kochhaus in case you are looking to expand your collection of kitchen gadgets.
If you have any questions, know of a great gluten-free address that has not yet been featured in these lists, let me know in the comments below or send me a message through the contact form. I’d love to hear from you! 🙂
